Born in 1946, Barry Shulman is a poker player and the CEO of CardPlayer Magazine. Even though he plays tons of tournaments every year, he says he doesn't consider himself a professional poker player or even a semi-pro. He considers himself a businessman who plays poker.
Shulman was born in Seattle, Washington and began playing poker while getting his accounting degree from the University of Washington in the 1960s. He worked in real estate for 25 years in the Seattle area before he and his wife moved to Las Vegas in the early 1990s. He used his retirement funds to purchase CardPlayer in 1999 and has since grown it from a low visibility brand to a premier destination for poker information. His son, Jeff Shulman, is also involved of the CardPlayer business.
He has 14 WSOP cashes, including 2 bracelets, and 8 WPT cashes, including 1 final table during Season Two for $112,780. As of January, 2010, his total live tournament winnings total $4,325,695.
His first bracelet came in the 2001 WSOP $1,500 Seven-Card Stud Hi-Lo Split 8-or-Better Event. His 2nd bracelet was his most impressive poker score - a 1st place finish on October 2nd, 2009 in the World Series of Poker Europe Main Event, beating Daniel Negreanu heads up for the £801,603 ($1,305,542) first place prize after a final table that lasted 16 hours and 32 minutes. This win was even more impressive because the European WSOP doesn't have all the amateur donkeys that the Vegas WSOP does so the fields are tougher because there is a higher mix of professional players.
In January, 2010, he also finished 3rd in the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event, winning $1,350,000 and also made the final table of a Professional Poker Tour (PPT) event, finishing 2nd in 2005.
