Townsend is a professional poker player best known for playing in high stakes online games.
His first experience playing poker was at a friend's house during his senior year in college at a $5 buy-in game.
Townsend began playing online poker at low stakes and would move up until he had 20 buyins. Eventually, he became a regular player in some of the highest stakes games online and became known as a heads-up and short-handed specialist. He played at no-limit hold 'em and pot-limit omaha at Full Tilt Poker under the nickname 'sbrugby.'
In 2009, Full Tilt suspended Townsend after alleging that Cole South, Brian Hastings and Townsend colluded to cheat Isildur1 out of millions. The allegations began right after Brian Hastings won $4.2 million dollars against Isildur1 in one day.
Townsend finished in the money in the "Festa Al Lago" Event during season 5 of the World Poker Tour. He has also cashed 3 times at the WSOP with his biggest cash being a $128,665 payout in the $40,000 No-Limit Holdem event in 2009.
He also appeared won $120,000 on NBC's Poker After Dark after beating Doyle Brunson heads-up. He also appeared on season 3 of GSN's High Stakes Poker, at which he sold 25 percent of himself because the game was bigger than he was used to.
His total live tournament winnings exceed $230,000.
Townsend is the former co-owner and lead instructor for an online instructional website where he posted video tutorials and blogged about his poker playing. He left the website is 2009.
