James Tippin is an amateur player who made it to the final table on the 2nd season of the World Poker Tour. While he was in Tunica, Mississippi, Tippin qualified for the WPT tourney through a $220 satellite in which he did three rebuys. After finishing in third place, he took home more than $328,230.
He had his work cut out for him after he got down to the final 3 players, since the other two were Chip Reese and Barry Greenstein. But he played impressively nonetheless. Even though he was as an amateur, he wasn't afraid of being pushed around. The hand he busted out on went this way: Chip Reese was short-stacked and went all-in on a semi-bluff. Tippin had pocket Queens and just flat-called his bet, knowing that Reese wasn't that strong. Greenstein came over the top of them both for over a million dollars with A-K. Tippin called, but Greenstein hit his hand.
Born in Toledo, Ohio, Tippin had recently retired after spending 45 years in the car wash business. After retiring, Tippin started devoting time to poker - a game he was already familiar with - in order to have some fun. Since his impressive WPT showing, Tippin has continued to play poker tournaments all over the US and continues to supplement his retirement income with poker winnings.
