David Chiu

David Chiu is a Chinese-American professional poker player, based in California, who has won four WSOP bracelets and a WPT title.

David Chiu was born and raised in China. He came to the U.S. in 1978 as an 18-year old college exchange student. He settled in Oregon and attended Oregon State University where he majored in computer science. After college, he moved to Denver, Colorado where he owned a Chinese restaurant and then took a second job as a poker dealer.

During the 1990’s, his interest in poker grew, and by 1996 he sold his restaurant to play poker professionally.

One year after turning pro, Chiu moved to Los Angeles, where there were plenty of card clubs. He took his time to learn all of the games to become a master of mixed-games.

Chiu first cashes in the WSOP in 1981 when he placed 4th in the $1,000 Ace to Five Draw event and continued to make cashes through the 1980s.

In 1996 he won his first WSOP bracelet in the $2,000 Limit Hold 'em event. Two years later, in 1998, he won the $500 Limit-Hold 'em event at the L.A. Poker Classic as well as his second bracelet in the $3,000 Limit-Hold 'em event at the 1998 WSOP.

In 2000 Chiu won his third WSOP bracelet in the WSOP $5,000 7-Card Stud event.

In 2002 Chiu finished in 2nd in the $2,000 Limit-Hold 'em event at the WSOP, and in 2005 he won his 4th WSOP bracelet in the $5,000 Omaha Hi/Lo event.

In 2003 Chiu made his first WPT final table, finishing 3rd behind Layne Flack and Jerry Buss.

In 2008 Chiu scored the biggest victory of his career when he overcame Gus Hansen's large chip lead to capture the WPT World Championship and the $3.4 million first-place prize.

Chui credits much of his success to being partially deaf, having lost 35% of his hearing at an early age, because it heightened his other senses and enabled him to better read other players.

Chui has 10 WPT cashes (2 final tables), 4 WSOP bracelets, 48 WSOP cashes. Chiu also cashed in the WSOP main event in 1996 (10th), 2003 (55th), and 2006 (416th.) As of 2009, his total live tournament winnings exceed $6,400,000.

That's so sad how people judge people on TV by their looks. Their looks shouldn't even be mentioned.
