Poker Player Profiles

Chris "Jesus" Ferguson

Born in Los Angeles, Chris "Jesus" Ferguson is one of the most recognizable players in poker. He has a unique look with his trademark long wavy black hair, well-groomed beard, sunglasses, and hat. But his clothing is just part of his image as a poker player. Outside the poker world, he never wears a cowboy hat and looks more like a university professor than a poker player. Some people like the image of being a good player but chris prefers the image of not being a good player, believing that his opponents will try to outplay him and he can take advantage of it. He hopes that players who play against him think because he looks like a cowboy that he probably dofesn't understand the game very deeply. He is one of the most popular players on the tournament circuit and plays in many of the larger buy-in tournaments. Since he doesn't have a lot of time to spend at poker, he decided to primarily play tournaments because he felt that the competition in them would be the greatest. He figured that the best way to learn to play better is to play against the top players and says he learns best by playing against the best.
Chris's introduction to gambling came at a very early age when his father, Thomas, who teaches statistics and game theory at U.C.L.A. (his mother also has a Ph.D. in mathematics), played games with him when he was a kid. He continually analyzed games or invented new ones, so he grew up with a very strong background in gamesmanship. Even back in the fourth grade, he was playing poker and in high school. Early in his college career, he took occasional trips to Las Vegas where I played $1-$2 and $2-$4 games. By playing very tightly and waiting for extremely good hands he found that he could make $4 an hour but he played for the challenge, to see if I could make a living at poker. After coming into a large amount of money through by winning a big blackjack tournament he decided to take a step up into higher limits.
Chris began playing poker seriously in 1993 and won the World Series of Poker in 2000 by beating TJ Cloutier on the river. On the final hand of the tournament TJ held AQ and Ferguson had A9. The flop was 2K4 with another King on the turn. If the board paired, the pot would have been split and Ferguson would have been saved, but he caught a 9 on the river and won.
Chris earned a Ph.D. in computer science (Artificial Intelligence) and his strong mathmatical skills have played a big part in his success. He does a lot of work with poker on the computer by analyzing situations, trying to simplify the game by making certain assumptions and then solving them to arrive at some basic rules that are useful in natural play. Although he has made a good name and some money at poker that isn't his primary focus - he plays poker more for the challenge than the money. Most if his income comes from his other jobs - he is a research assistant and has also done consulting work for the California State lottery and the Bureau of the Census, as well as for individuals. Eventually he says that he would like to be a professor of game theory at a major university or work for a company on Wall Street, analyzing stocks or trading. He is married and resides in Pacific Palisades, California and lists Eric Seidel, Dan Harington, Mike Sexton, and Daniel Negranu and players he respects the most.

He sucked out on the river 3-4 times to beat TJ for the Championship, when it got to heads-up TJ was underchiped 400,000 to 4,700,000, and came back to take the lead at one point. The last hand TJ went all-in with AQ and the choaking Ferguson called with A9 (a desperate move, by someone who doesn't believe he can win)...and sucked out on the river for the 4th time against TJ with a 9. AS A PENALTY, FOR THOSE WHO SUCKOUT TO WIN THE MAIN CHAMPIONSHIP..I believe they should cut their hair! MAN LAW?

Re Ferguson in the Heads Up Tourney September 3, 2005
You guys don't know what you are talking about. He was pushing AI on every hand because he was short stacked and the blinds were high. When you are in that position heads up, all you can really do is play a lotto ticket and go AI with whatever you got. When you are short stacked and paying out what amounts to 1/5th your pile every hand just in blinds, you go with what you got.

Im not trying to bash Chris Ferguson here but i just watched the 2005 national-headsup-championships... where he goes heads-up with Phil Helmuth, it was so hard to watch.Chris was on tilt from the very start, he then proceeded to push all in every single hand im not even joking. he was on hard-core tilt, he gave up.. he didnt want to win with class he coulda cared less how he won. i mean you would think u would prefer to outplay your opponents and w/ the sheer power of your mind win. Of course he got raped by helmuth, it wasnt even a match. Helmuth didnt play great or nothin, chris was just on tilt.

Great tourney player.Top notch technician. His style of play isn't as fearsome as a Gus Hansen type, but his overall game is superb.Definitley in the top 20 tourney players in the world. Hat or no hat, long hair or no long hair, beard or no beard, there isn't a person on this website who wouldn't leave a game against him with empty pockets.

August 26, 2005
Well, saw you play at the national heads up championship, and I must say at the end I was actually rooting for Phil to beat you. You played terribly, especially with that two pair calling that all in, so many hands that could have beaten you, and the announcer even said that "an amateur wouldn't even make this call" and you did, and of course you caught that miracle 9 at the river. You have an aggressive style, but just being able to throw chips at random doesn't make you a good player. Don't get me wrong, I think you're a good sport and a good person and you're definitely talented at chopping up produce with playing cards; however, as far as a poker player is concerned I think you're sub par compared to the rest.

If you look over his resume over the past 5-10 years, he finishes in the money and at the final table as consistently as anyone. He's also versatile and able to finish high in any of the poker events, and very interesting to watch play. I hope to see him perform well at the 2005 WSOP.

August 26, 2005
Jesus doesn't focus solely on poker like 90 percent of other pros. He has a life outside of poker.......and that is good news for most of the pros. If Ferguson applied himself totally and completely to poker and played in more events, I'd say he could be among the 20 greatest of all time, maybe top 10. As it stands now, he is one of the best in the world and has cashed so many times at the WSOP it is scary. A threat EVERY YEAR to win a bracelet in one of several games.

hey this is for "a smart poker dude" the wsop is more and more about luck as the numbers rise in entries. back when there were 8 players in 1972 it was about skill. so winning the WSOP does not a great poker player make. HOWEVER i do believe that CHris is a great palyer, not because he won the WSOP once but because he's a consistant winner at many games. making it in the money year aftyer year is an accomplishment in those crazy HUGE tourneys winning maybe by chance or happenstance winning the whole thing that is, but like Dan Harrington's 4 final talbes and other players money finishes they show true skill. any dick can win the main event once and never doit again, but it takes a true player to be a consistant threat.

Jesus Ferguson is a "card player", which means he will be more consistent than most other people at his table. I think that strong math & reasoning skills play a huge role in your ability in poker (or any game for that matter). Jesus obiously has skills, but might not always get the cards. This guy needs some serious props. Definately more than CMM!

I like this guy. He seems to have a good personality. However, in 2003 he made a comment to the tv broadcast about how he has a BS in computers and/or math and a PhD in computer science. Then he said he can not believe how people play in the WSoP w/o his level of education. Shortly after he got a bad run of cards on a low stack and went home.Seems like you do not have to have a PhD in anything to win. You have to have some skill and some luck.Again I like the guy but hope he is not one of these secret society hand shaking jerks that thinks if you do not have a college education that you are an idiot.By the way I have a BS in Civil Engineering and it is just a piece of paper that shows I'm trainable. It doesn't make me better than anyone.
