Dan Harrington

Dan Harrington is a professional poker player who is best known for winning the WSOP main event in 1995, making the WSOP main event final table in back-to-back years in 2003 and 2004, and authoring several high-regarded books on poker.

A former attorney, Harrington was born in 1945 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is a former champion backgammon player, U.S. chess master (he won the 1971 Massachusetts State Chess Championship), and bankruptcy lawyer.

Harrington played poker at the Mayfair Club with other now-famous players like Howard Lederer and Erik Seidel. Harrington earned the ironic nickname "Action Dan" even though he is known as a generally tight player. Harrington won the WSOP main event in 1995 for $1,000,000 and made three other main event final tables, placing 6th in 1987 for $43,750, 3rd (out of 839 players) in 2003 for $650,000, and 4th (out of 2,576 players) in 2004 for $1,500,000. His run of back-to-back main event final tables is considered by some people to be the greatest accomplishment in World Series history. As defending champion in 1996, Harrington made another deep run in the main event, finishing in 17th place and earning $23,400. He also cashed in the 2009 main event, finishing in 252nd place for a $32,963 payout.

In 1995, he also won a bracelet in the $2,500 No-Limit Hold'em event for $249,000.

He made his first WPT final table in 2005, winning $620,730 for his 2nd place finish in the Doyle Brunson North American Championship. In 2007, during season 6 of the WPT he won the Legends of Poker for $1,634,865.

Sporting his trademark green Boston Red Sox cap, Harrington is a respectful player who is known to be a tight-aggressive player who can get creative when he needs to.

In addition to being a successful professional poker player, Harrington also works in real estate and the stock market and spends a large amount of his time on his business interests. He considers himself only a part-time players who usually only plays the bigger tournaments.

In 2008, Harrington made his first appearance on the NBC show Poker After Dark in the "Mayfair Club" episode. This tournament brought together players who had played at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The other players in the tournament were: Howard Lederer, Steve Zolotow, Mickey Appleman, Jay Heimowitz, and Mike Shictman, the owner of the Mayfair Club for many years. Jay Heimowitz won the tournament after defeated Howard Lederer in heads-up play. Harrington finished in 6th place.

Harrington has co-written 3 books on tournament poker ("Harrington on Hold'em" series) and 2 on cash games (the "Harrington on Cash Games" series). These books are considered by most players to be some of the most valuable poker books on the market today.

As of 2009, he has 8 WPT cashes, 2 WSOP bracelets, 10 WSOP cashes, 4 WSOP main event final tables, and live tournament winnings exceeding $6,600,000.

This guy is one of the best out there! His back to back final tables in the 2003 and 2004 WSOP main event is one of the most unbelievable accomplishments ever! (fields 839 and 2,500+ respectively)

Dan makes solid plays and smart reads. He doesn't do any talking with his mouth but, instead, shuts everyone up with his play!

Again, I'll agree with you Donkey Slayer. Harrington's Hold em part 2 is an incredible read. I learned a lot from it. Definitely a recommended read for those looking to improve their hold em game.

Harrington on Hold em part 2. AWESOME. Dan is a genius, best poker mind around. I learned alot on top of the deluge of knowledge I already had. Guys, read his book NOW. I guarentee and extra 5-25 pots you will win in your next tourney, barring suck outs of course

DonkeySlayer on August 2, 2006

I agree, he's a great player, and can play the table position and chip position.

The problem with TV is that we see him bluffing, and everyone thinks, "What happened to the tight Dan we know?"

He's my favorite pro.

dufushipster on December 16, 2005

FYI, 'Action' Dan Harrington isn't as tight as people thinks he is. He plays smart poker based on position and odds.

Consiedering the record breaking number of enteries thoses years. I just wish he was younger so we could watch and learn more form him. Chalk up one more for the good guys

JetsFan315 on July 28, 2005

englishcat i have a legitimate question - suppose that you REALLY do know these players, why the fuck do you feel compelled to write up your conversations and future plans with each player on public messageboards? A real friend wouldnt wanna brag about knowing each one since they have more respect. But since u are a lying piece of shit then i guess it doesnt apply to you.

JetsFan315 on July 22, 2005

Thats a common mistake levelled at Dan thinking hes just lucky..I said the same when we were at the 19th after playing golf...we sat in front of the fire drinking beer and chatting..he said "Cat some people think Im just lucky what should I do?"..I said "Dan let them kepe thinking it then take their money with a solid hand"..he grinned and said "Thats fantastic advice Cat,Thanks"...I said "Anything for a friend Dan"

englishcat on July 18, 2005

Probably my favorite poker player. Here's a tidbit: prior to 1995, Harrington avoided tournaments and concentrated strictly on big, no limit cash games. On an whim, he entered the 2,500 hold'em event in the 1995 WSOP and went on to win his first bracelet in his FIRST WSOP event. He followed that up with the Main Event bracelet and THEN went on to win the European Championships that same year. He's the real deal.

Great player on July 17, 2005

Yes Dan is the real deal as u put it....anyways Im about to phone Dan and have a good long chat with him..we might discuss about me going over to see him and play golf somewhere..I read rumours that Dan was thinking of retiring after the world series..after speaking to Dan afterwards I can say that rumour was false..Dan is such a good friend he tells me everything so I know he wont retire :)

englishcat on July 17, 2005

If you want to really appreciate Dan Harrington's greatness, read his books, "Harrington on Hold 'em, Vols I and II." In them, he discusses his 6-2 bluff in the WSOP and how the situation dictated that move. His poker books are the best I've read, and I've read them all. The man is a game theory genius. You may not enjoy watching him, and that's fine. But once you read his books, you really appreciate the depth of his understanding. Dan Harrington does NOTHING by accident. Every move, even those that look like impulsive bluffs or weak folds, have layers of logic behind them. I do think he has a bit of a problem with Paul Phillips, though. Anybody have any insight on that? He talks about "high tech millionaires" in his book in unflattering terms, and it sure sounds to me like he's referring to Phillips.

harrington's call in his 95 win with a pair of 8's was aweseome and taught me so much. Yes, I know it was top pair. But if you can listen to his rational through all the noise of the winning moment, you hear him explain that the bet by his opponent looked like an over bet considering the situation and how the pre-flop betting went. Now, that's how you read a player.

Harrington has won a main event braclet had a final table before the win and 2 final talbes since the win in the 2 largest fields in all of poker. Hansen is an undisiplined fuck who holds stupid cards against a big raise and often gets lucky. He's also not very aggresive, Very loose, but not aggresive. Dan Rules.

Sammy the Brick on March 12, 2005

Nothing special about Harrington? Two straight final tables at the WSOP. Harrington is easy to read? He made a great bluff with rags at last year's WSOP and everyone folded. He knows how to use his supertight table image.

Sarge on February 6, 2005

Do you realize how important it is to constantly refocus and notice every detail for even 2-3 hours in smaller tourneys or games? Now imagine 10+ hours a day for 3-6 days in a row. Now do it when your 50+ years old. He even says it himself it's all about paying attention and having incredible stamina/perception. He is beating all these young, agressive pups time and time again with a major disadvantage of being older.

Dan is THE most incredible player on February 1, 2005

4000 players at this years main event; I would bet on Dan making it to the final table.

Dan Harrington's bluff with 62o was the bluff of the century! Back To Back Top 4 finishes in the WSOP Main Event is an extraordinary achievement considering the all time high (by far) number of entrants into the main event. He is clearly one of the best players in the world.

vincent on January 23, 2005

Wow, you'd think after making back to back WSOP final tables, Harrington wouldn't bust on failed bluff attemps. Talk about blue balls!

Nobody famous on January 22, 2005

YEAH! Go Action Dan!

Unregistered on January 20, 2005

If harrington reads this correct me if Im wrond. ESPN only shows a very very small fraction of the hands played in the wsop. Harrington bluffs just like EVERY other player in the wsop. They just dont show it. We saw maybe ten hand out of thousands that he played. Any guys who can be top 20 two years ina row and show class at the table has earned my respect

have to be in it to win it on January 17, 2005

I appreciate all of your concerns about my game being too tight. However, this style has been working for me for over twenty years now. I don't think I should suddenly become Gus Hansen.Hey and don't forget the Red Sox won last year! This year the hat will carry me to the bracelet once again.

Dan Harrington on January 16, 2005

I see him at my table, I run.

lol on January 16, 2005

its awesome to see a calm, classy guy doing so well. with all these whiny punks (matusow, arieh hellmuth) out there, dan harrington stands above them as not just an amazing player but a classy 1 as well thats why hes my ace

harringtonsmyace on January 7, 2005

classy and an unbelieveable player, good chance at winning next year

wolfy14 on January 5, 2005

i made a 1k wager with a friend that dan the man would make it to the final table this year.

Fuckn Legend For Getting Himself Through Those Big Fuckn Fields The Last Two Years To Make It To The Final Table.

Unregistered on December 19, 2004

Harrington is a legend and perhaps the most underrated poker player of all time. He has a chance to win EVERY tournament he plays for the simple fact that he doesn't make stupid mistakes. When he bluffs, he usually gets the field to fold better hands. He isn't flashy or loud or overly aggressive so not too many people pattern their game after him.......that is THEIR LOSS! Dan RULES!

mje on December 11, 2004

action dan is one of the best ever ...1995 winner 2 final tables..need i say more? maybe he plays with no frills, but hes a solid player that every pro fears .

djnpa_30 on November 25, 2004

That was a great play by Harrington. Because it worked. And...because he's Dan Harrington and he commands that respect. Just for kicks; another candidate for bluff of the century has to be last years final table, heads up Farha versus Moneymaker. I forgot the circumstances, but the amateur bluffed all in with nothing and Farha let him take it down...definitely worth consideration bc it was heads up at the final table

Jaime on November 24, 2004

i want that hat....he made the final table with it...why chance a good thing?

pokerstud85 on November 24, 2004

what the hell is the deal with that damned silly ass green hat,, i'll buy him a new one if he will just throw that 1 in the trash

ray on November 9, 2004

Perhaps the "Bluff of the Century" (a century less than 5 years old...) can be attributed to the Crypt Keeper's normal/usual/extremely tight play - rather than

Opus Dog on November 8, 2004

one of the best in the game.made the final table in the main event the past two years.of a field of 839 and over 2600 he is incredable.plus he won it in 95.he WILL make it 3 years in a roll in 2005

i hate the river on November 5, 2004

in responce to the bluff of the century, I have to agree. Except that he was soooo easy to read, his eyes were shifting frantically I would have known he was bluffing even without the pocket cam but it did work, that's what being tight gets you. YESS! TIGHT PLAYERS RULE!

Sammy the Brick on November 4, 2004

Harrington made the bluff of the CENTURY in this years WSOP. All preflop, in poor position, against two raising chip leaders, Harrington (on a short stack) looks down at 6,2 offsuit, and calmly raises three quarters of his stack (making it almost 600,000 to play). Everyone folds except Raymer (with a stack about 20 times the size of Harrington) who stares Dan down through his Lizard Glasses holding A,2 which absolutely OWNS Harrington. Raymer motions towards his chips, then tosses his hand, telling Dan, "Take the money." Harrington calmly takes down the pot which eventually saved him from being eliminated before the top 5. Hence the 4th place finish and 1 million dollar payout. Easily the bluff of the century.

poker analyst on November 2, 2004

dan harrington is the best player ever in the history of the WSOP n my view- ok he hasn't won 3 titles like Ungar and Moss but he has made 3 final tables and come well up the money in each one placing 1st in 1995, 3rd in 2003, 4th in 2004...as the field gets bigger every year- he gets stronger!

scott the iceman on October 26, 2004

Why does anyone play a pot against this guy. Go observe him in the first few rounds of a large tournament and you'll see he always has the best of it. I don't get why person after person goes all-in against this dude.

Scuba_Groves on October 26, 2004

i'm a tight player i am a consistant winner but i'm also aggresive, aggresive doesn't mean stupid it means a fast hard hitting player, which this guy is, and he's made 4 final tables, glad to see a tight player get his props, and not a dick like hansen

Sammy the Brick on October 26, 2004

Maybe it's just me, but I am convinced that Harrington is actually the Crypt Keeper....

Opus Dog on October 26, 2004

Simply put... Dyreekio you are way off... i guarantee his rep for being a tight player is not gone

YEA OK! on October 19, 2004

this guy plays so few hands, but obviously he knows what he is doing. i play anything

i suck at poker on October 19, 2004

he kicked ass last year, and the year before and 95. but I would like to see him do it again. he built up this strong reputation of being sucha tight player. so in the 05 he went all in constantly on crap and it worked for a while but then he got screwed. now his rep is gone

Dyreekio on October 14, 2004

simply put, he is the best.

"Way too conservative. This guy will fold poket Jacks"What good play wouldnt, in a certain situation. THis guy is my favorite player, hes tight yet aggressive, and will bluff in certain situations (and because of his rep usually win). back to back years on the final table that had the biggest fields ever is amazaing. never loud or annoying just plays the game.

jake on September 23, 2004

how can you critize his play when the guy has moved through the biggest crowds and has won it all, that is the best acompolishment ever at the wsop, dj your an idiot

brill on August 2, 2004

well, pocket jacks are not always a good hand to keep

Bertha on July 30, 2004

thats a good point berha. i dont feel dan is too conservative...he is more so than other players but conservation is his strength. he sits back and lets other players do damage to each other...just when you don't expect it, he'll shift gears and start to play more hands

MelJ on July 30, 2004

making the wsop main event final table two years in a row, espeacially with as many people entering it as they did in the past two years is amazing...shows he has the skills

Scotty2Hotty on July 10, 2004

Mr. Harrington is a world class player. Had it not been for Moneymaker last year, and Raymer this year, he could have won back to back titles. One of the all-time best players there is.

I LOVE DAN on June 27, 2004

The man made the final table two years running at the WSOP championship event, earning over 2 million. With the size of today's field, its truly amazing. Big Dan may be the best in the world based on his recent WSOP appearances.

herman007 on June 24, 2004

Why does it seem like everyone under estimates this guy? He is clearly one of the best ever maybe even the best.

brian on June 21, 2004

VABORIS on June 20, 2004

Your welcome sexy ;)

Tryla on June 14, 2004

It doesn't happen much, people don't keep showing up late in the wsop.harrington is there alot it seems throwing at least 1/9 th of the rounders thiery out the window. I try to model my game after him, but my emotins or more like Hellmuth, and I would rather have the respect of Harrington. All tough he doesnt play alot of hands he can play any hand he wants. If harrington moved in with 7 2 off suite he proably wouldn't get a call.If Harrington checked me I would not raise could be trap. he is the model all poker players should look to.

smurfs on June 14, 2004

Tryla on June 12, 2004

Even though I think winning the WSOP is mostly luck(Dan Harrington won the WSOP either in 1994 or 1995), you got to give Harrington a lot of credit. Dan Harrington is the one of the most consistent poker players of all time.

Jay T. on June 10, 2004

Dan is one of the best consevative players around. He is a tight player but when he gets a good hand he plays it masterfully.

4 aces on June 8, 2004

After his showing at this years WSOP, and his showings over the past 8 years, Dan has got to be considered one of the best tourney players in history.
