Poker Player Interviews

"betrfoldem" on Ultimate Bet

In this section we interview various amatuer players who have had recent accomplishments about different aspects of their game. Although reading books written by the poker greats can be inspiring, I find it more inspiring to read about talented up-and-comers because they can give you a real-time story about their learning experiences. "betrfoldem" entered a $200 + $15 tournament on Ultimate Bet on February 14th with 444 total entrants and ended up finishing first and won $26,400.

PROFILE

    Name? Kenny Egri Jr.

Where are you from? Weddington NC, a small town outside of charlotte, i'm originally from new jersey, been here about 5 years now

    Age? 23

    Sex? male

What do you do for work? I'm a real estate investor

POKER PROFILE

How long have you been playing poker? 1 year

How long have you been playing poker online? 1 year

Do you prefer playing online or brock & mortar? and why? Online, basically because there's a lot more loose calls and plays and more money

How many hours a week do you play? about 35 - 40

Where did you learn how to play? self taught, from books and my own beats

Have there been any books that helped you learn how to play? There are a few books i really liked that helped me, The theory of poker i think had the biggest influence on me

What is your favorite game? No limit holdem

What is your favorite site? Ultimate bet

Who is your favorite poker player? and what players do you look up to? I look up to every one of them, i think they are all amazing to be able to grind it out constantly...the player i admire most would be howard lederer just because of his intelligent decisions when playing...rarely does he make a mistake, and that's what i try to follow

What is your biggest poker accomplishment? i guess it would the most recent win on a 200 multi tournament. It paid 26,400 and it was a great win, but i still feel my best accomplishment was winning a super satellite to go to the ultimate classic. I worked really hard for that win. I had only been playing poker 4 months, and i played every single day, learning from my mistakes and what i did wrong, and i played against the best of them that day, and i didn't know that much about what i was doing. And i was able to win. To me...that was great

What goals do you have as a poker player? my main goal is to just be recognized and to be known and a respected player. Winning the world series would be great to, but not my main goal

What limits & games do you typically play? I'm mostly a tournament player, i've found i'm not a consistent winner in just regualar holdem games, but if i do play, it's usually 10 20, but i'm usually just passing time waiting for a tournament to start

What is your style of play? I don't really have one particular style of play, i'd like to think i adjust my style to the situation

What are your strengths as a player? I personally feel my strenths are being a tight agressive player, also i don't get too involved in any one hand. I see a lot of people make that mistake. They feel entitlement that because they get a premium starting hand they should win. I don't have a problem laying down hands like Aces or Kings if i feel i've been beaten. I think when you can get yourself to do that, that you'll take your game to a whole different level

What are your weaknesses? From what i can think of, i have only one weakness that hurts me most, and that is i become impatient with hands. I start trying to push the issue, and i wind up crippling myself. Usually i have a hard time recovering after that happens to me.

Do you play poker mainly for the money, entertainment, or for the challenge? Money and recognition

TOURNAMENT

Tell me about how the tourney went? (Did you think you had a good chance to win? Did you get a big chip early or were you below-average stack for most of the tourney?, etc.) It was an actually very smooth tournament for me. I knew going in i had a good shot at winning. But i always think that when i sit in a tournament. I stayed quiet, i was pretty much at average for most of the way. Luckily the tournament leader was at my table. He had about 100,000 in chips when the average was like 17,000. I got to watch and study his play the entire tournament. I believe that is what helped me ultimately win. I made a move when there was about 50 people left which put me into 2nd place, still about 50,000 behind the chip leader, i took the lead with about 30 people left, and i never relinquished it.

Tell me in detail about some of the keys hands that you remember or big decisions you had to make: 4 hand i remember specifically. First one was in the middle of the tournament. I was about 5000 in chips which was average at the time, and i got 33 in the hole. Two people limped in, and one guy bet the pot which was about 200 at the time. He'd had been playing loose so i figured i'd take a flop with it. Well the flop came 33K. I flopped quads in 4 way action. I checked, and 2 checks behind me, and the aggressor bets 400 into me. I cold called. Turn card come A. So now i'm hoping he has AK and i can get paid. He moved all in on me. And i doubled up with 4 of a kind

The next really important hand to me came at the final table. There were 8 people left, i was the chip leader with blinds of 5000 10000. The earlier chip leader who's username was nvrsurrender opened up for about a 45000 raise. I had 32 in the hole and called him. Flop was 2 7 Q. He bet another 30000 and i called. (i'd been watching him the entire tournament and had a feel he was on a draw) Turn card was a K. He bet 60000 and i moved all in on him. If he called and lost he would be out. He folded and showed me he had J 10 suited. He was open ended. I showed him my 32. I got him on tilt from that hand, and he never really recovered from it. He did finish in 3rd though and got 10,000 for his efforts. Said at one point in the tournament he needed to win for confidence, i hope 3rd was enough for him.

When there were 4 people left, i was the chip leader, King selveid was in 2nd, and nvrsurrender was in 3rd, and a guy lefty i think was his username was in 4th. Nvrsurrender opened the pot for an enourmas raise. Like a third of his chips. King selveid called him, and i moved all in on both of them with QQ. I knew neither of them can make the call b/c if they did and lost, they'd be out, and the short stack lefty would move up in the money with virtually no chips. Not to mention if i did lose, i still had about a 2 to 1 lead on any of the 4 players. So they both folded, and the next hand lefty went out. 2 hands later nvrsurrender got knocked out.

And finally, the hand that won me the tournament. Nothing big or spectacular. I raised everything i got. had a 3 to 1 lead over King, and was just trying to cut him down, not let him breathe, just plain smart aggression. So i got J9 offsuit and came out firing at him. He called me, and i flopped a Jack. I fired a nice bet at him, and he came over the top for about 48000. I hesistated, and moved all in. He called with 99. Never made the set, and my pair of jacks won me the tournament.

What do you plan on doing with your winnnings? A lot of bills are going to be paid off
