i had the chance to play with Phil Laak in this years world series... not the main event but a 1500 no limit event. He seemed like an all around nice guy and from what i could tell was a very good player, definately took control ( maybe because everyone knew who he was) or maybe not. I actually got to play a decent sized pot early on with him when he reraised my button raise out of the big blind and then bet again on the flop...... i really thought he didnt have a whole lot but i also didnt feel that if i raised him he couldnt get away from his hand because he woulda been really priced in..... so i folded, 4 or 5 hours later after we were both out i had a chance to talk to him in the hallway and he took the time to discuss the hand with me and everything. seems like a real likeable and stand up guy. thanks in part to Phil my first world series experience was a success.

I lived with Phil Laak for over a year,he was my roomate.He knew backgammon very well,and when i met him,he was just starting poker.I taught him most everything he knows.But i can tell you one thing,he is a smart guy.He knows how he comes off,and yes it is an act...but hes like a child in some ways,very immature.Fun to be with though...i know things about him that one one else does in the world.There are quite a few things actually im sure he would like to sweep under the rug and forget(Thailand,cheating,drug stuff etc). I cant even get in contact with him now cuz hes so famous...shame really.
Aside from all his antics, he is a genius ...only another genius can know this,so i can label him with safety.
I can tell you he would LOVE being warned at a game about his behavior,he loves confrontation,arguements...taking things to the next level.Any questions people might have i can answer...i probably know him better than anyone...

TV poker is becoming unwatchable and will soon be dumbed-down to total oblivion within a few years. A prime example was Phil heads up against Chan in the WSOP. After his incessant babbling and doing situps on the floor I was fed up and took a stand...I TURNED THE TV OFF! I foresee more of this in the upcoming season of WPT as more idiot behavior enters the fray along with their annoying friends cheering wildly on the rails.

I've known Phil "Unabomber" "Ultrajag" Laak for 9 years or so. All is never as it seems with him, which is of course perfect for poker. I could tell some hysterical stories. He is very hard to smack with a chair. The funny thing about him living with J.Tilly (met her at SJ couple months ago) is that she was in "Let It Ride", one of the best gambling movies ever.As for him being "lucky"......At that same tournament (Shooting Stars), I stepped into the snack bar and overheard some old nit telling a buddy "That Gus guy is just lucky, that's all." I met Phil Laak in the Commerce Casino this week and personally watched him take many big pots off of some the best no limit players LA has to offer. He was one of the best players without a doubt. He was down to earth and approachable toward me even though I was the stereotypical, busted at the time, railbird. Phil, although you may be a soulless wasteland gamble to bone type of guy the players were seething at, my hats off to you and your pretty damn good play. P.S. "phil laak sucks" "phil laak is immature" "unabomber is a offensive nickname" For the first, he does not suck, he is a "semi-professional" poker player, and ok he has REALLY much luck, but thats life. he gambles. His style is fun to watch.. And no, the other people playing on the final wpt-table with him did not got disturbed by his style. They seemed to ejoy it a bit.. (specially in the heads-up) also the dealer did not get nervous or whatever when phil got behind and looked over shoulder.. And about "his" nickname. Chill down, he didnt choose his style to try to look as the mailbomber Unabomber, the other gave him that nickname.. Phil Laak is a good, unpredictable player and it is amusing to watch him. I don't get what everyone complains about. His antics really aren't that bad. I've never seen him do anything that is insulting to the other players... (Guess who) If you are indeed a PROFESSIONAL player, try acting like one. Win, lose, draw...do it all with some style. If you need instruction, look no further than Sam Farha or Howard Lederer. They might not win all of the time, but they never act like morons at the table.

Hey all...I just saw this guy on t.v. win a tourney against Humberto Brenes at the Commerce Casino in Los Angeles. While I admit he won simply because of luck (there was an Ace drawn on the river to give him a pair of rockets over Humberto's pair of 8's), Mr. Laak had to have had some talent to make it to that final table. He was crazy, though!! Kept taking his shoes off, kept jumping up and down almost like he was a monkey, and he was trying to get peaks at the turn and the river cards before they were layed down. I didn't think players were allowed to do that. (If anyone out there saw this same game, did you notice the dirty looks that one female dealer kept giving Mr. Laak everytime he tried to peek??)

Phil Laak is another good player. Not great but good. The antics he needs to leave at home. Nothing humerous about it at all. He seems to suffer from A.D.D. (Attention Deficit Dissorder). The WPT needs to crack down on him and make him act like he has civilized parents. Otherwise, no more tourneys. Period.
