Kathy Liebert is one of the most well-respected and talented female poker players in the game.
Liebert was born in Tennessee and grew up in Long Island, New York. She started playing poker as a kid in low stakes games with her family. She started playing as a prop in 1991 and then began playing tournaments in 1994. She earned a B. S. degree in business and finance from Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY. She worked as an analyst for Dunn and Bradstreet for a year where and did well but didn't enjoy the work. After quitting that job and traveling for a while, she moved to California where she played poker in Las Vegas.
She first cashed at the 1997 when she finished 2nd in the $3,000 No Limit Hold'em event for $123,690.
She first made a name for herself when she won the first Party Poker million tournament, earning $1,000,000. She became the first woman to a million dollar prize in a tournament. She made a deal with the 2nd and 3rd places finishers, Berj Kacherian and Phil Hellmuth, so she only really made half the announced prize, but she still deserves credit.
At the WSOP she has 1 WSOP bracelet and 30 WSOP cashes. At the 2004 WSOP, Liebert won a bracelet in a $1,500 limit Texas hold 'em Shootout event. At the 2008 WSOP, she made the final table of the $10,000 Pot-Limit Hold'em World Championship, finished in 3rd place for $306,064.
At the WPT she has 13 cashes and 6 final tables. She finished in 3rd in the 2005 Borgata Poker Open for $427,115, making her the highest finishing woman on the WPT at the time. J. J. Liu broke that record in 2007 when she finished 2nd but Liebert tied that record at the 2009 Shooting Stars tournament, placing 2nd to Steve Brecher, making $550,000. Her record was broken on March 5, 2008, when Van Nguyen became the first woman to win a televised WPT.
She said that she has been successful due to her competitiveness as well as the many hours she spent playing low-limits when she started out. She likes to enter some of her tournaments through single-table satellites because they offer a way to reduce costs. She maintains an investments portfolio to complement her poker winnings.
As of 2009, her total live tournament winnings exceed $5,600,000. She has won more prize money in tournaments than any other woman in poker history. She now resides in both California and Nevada, where she can be seen playing at many WPT and WSOP tournaments.
