Liz Lieu is a Vietnamese professional poker player.
Born in 1974 in Vietnam, Lieu moved with her family to Colorado when she was a young girl. Her parents worked several jobs to provide a good life for Liz and her sister. She first learned to play poker in high school, and soon began running poker games before she was 18. This experience led her to move to Las Vegas where she began to get serious about poker. She played cash games and eventually made enough money to support herself as well as her parents while moving between homes in Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
Although she was making a lot of money in cash games (up to $500/$1000 limit), she got convinced by her friend, John Phan, in 2005 to start playing tournaments. She played in the 2005 WSOP and cashed 3 times, including a 5th place finish in the $1,500 no-limit hold'em event, earning $168,590.
At the Bellagio's 2005 Festa Al Lago tournament, she placed fourth in the $2,500 no limit hold'em event and 16th in two other top tournaments in the series, winning more than $80,000 in total. In 2006, she won the $1,000 limit hold'em event at the L.A. Poker Classic in Los Angeles, and one year later won the $1,000 no-limit hold'em event.
Lieu was approached by MartinsPoker.com, an online poker site led by poker pro and friend, Martin de Knijff and Lieu signed on as part of the Martins Poker team. During an online $200/$400 game, she was playing against one of the best online players, Erik Sagstrom (Erik123), and lost $34,000. Later, she learned that Sagstrom called her a fish. So Lieu and Sagstrom decided to play three matches of $2000/$4000 limit hold'em at the Venetian, each on a different day, with each player buying in for $200,000 each day. Lieu won 2 out of the 3 matches to win their challenge, and the money.
In 2007 Lieu signed an exclusive partnership with Chilipoker to represent the poker room. In 2009, she also appeared in Hong Kong movie "Poker King" as herself.
Like many other poker pros, she is looking to leverage her success and fame into ventures beyond poker. She has an agent, product endorsements, sponsorship deals, business ventures, and her own website (www.LizLieu.net). Her good looks have also helped her gain a lot of attention.
Lieu also donates a lot of money to charity and says that she would eventually she like to settle down and have a family, but right now she is just focused on business and poker. She bought a high-rise condo in near the strip in Las Vegas, which allows her to be closer to the games she plays in at the Bellagio.
As of 2008, Lieu has 7 WSOP cashes, 2 WPT cashes, and over $690,000 in live tournament play.
