Nicknamed "The Flying Dutchman", Marcel Luske is a professional poker player from Amsterdam. His is best recognized by wearing his sunglasses upside-down.
Born in 1953 and raised in Amsterdam, Marcel Luske is one of the most entertaining players around. He is always talking or singing at the table, and wears suits during poker tournaments. He loves friendly competition and loves giving other players a hard time - but in a respectful way, sort of like a European version of Scotty Nguyen.
Despite his casual, jovial nature, he has an undeniable instinct for the game of poker. This was evident when he laid down a hand pre-flop against another player who had raised with pocket Kings. After Luske laid it down he said to the other player, "Your kings are good". Then the other player, trying to cover up the fact that his play was easily readable, said "You mean my Ace-King?" to which Luske replied "No, your pocket kings."
After learning poker by playing cash games in Amsterdam, he decided to attempt to make it on the tournament circuit. After winning some tournaments in Amsterdam and all over Europe, he went to the U.S. in search of bigger poker winnings.
Luske won the European Poker Awards Player of the Year in 2001 after numerous 1st place finishes in European tournaments.
His breakout year was 2004. At the WSOP that year he finished in 2nd place to Joe Awada in the $5,000 Seven-card stud tournament, earning $120,800. He also finished 10th in the main event, made $373,000, and finished just one spot away from the final table. With the help of these accomplishmetns, Luske won the European Poker Awards Player of the Year again in 2004.
In 2005, Luske won the Five-Star World Poker Classic for $212,070, the €10,000 Hall of Fame Poker Classic in Paris for €119,000 ($142,503), and the € 5,000 No Limit Hold'em Master Classics of Poker for € 85,800 ($102,462).
In 2006 Luske finished 7th in the European Poker Tour championship for $134,902. That same year he finished 4th in the $5,000 No Limit Hold'em WSOP for $204,638.
At the 2008 WSOP, Luske 4th in the $5,000 Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo event for $95,069 and 3rd in the $3,000 H.O.R.S.E. event for $110,264.
Luske has also made appearances on the TV show Late Night Poker.
As of 2009, he has 20 WSOP cashes, 4 WPT cashes, and total live tournament winnings exceed $3,700,000.
At the 2004 WSOP Luske famously mentored David Williams while they both were playing the main event. Williams ended up finishing in 2nd place to Greg Raymer. He also mentored Russian pro Kirill Gerasimov.
