February 11, 2004 - Party Poker software changes
PartyPoker.com has implemented some new Policy/Software changes that we would like to make you aware of.

Disconnect Protection:
In an effort to better standardize and make clear the rules and policies of poker at PartyPoker.com we have renamed what was previously call ‘all-in protection’ to ‘Disconnect Protection’.
All-in is defined as: When a player bets all his or her chips. Because the term “all-in” is meant to specifically mean that a player bet all of his or her chips, it is confusing to associate the act of disconnecting from the internet, and then being allowed to continue in the hand, with betting all of one’s chips.

You will notice a few changes in the lobby and on the game screen.
Lobby – Options – Request Disc. Protect. ‘Request Disc. Protect’ replaces what used to be ‘Request all-in reset’.
From the game screen – Dealer Tray - Request Disc. Protect. ‘Request Disc. Protect’ replaces what used to be ‘All-in reset’.
On the game screen, ‘Disconnect-Protect: 1’ has replaced what was ‘All-ins: 1’
You will also notice the appropriate changes made to the website.
Understanding the reason behind having disconnect protection is important. If you are unfamiliar with our Disconnect Policies please Click here

Multi Table Tournaments:
1. Disconnect Protection – The Disconnect Protection Policy for Multi Table Tournaments has been changed to allow one (1) Disconnect Protection per person, per tournament. Once a player has used that protection he will not be entitled to any further disconnect protection. Each players disconnect protection for a specific tournament will expire as soon as that tournament has ended (or that player has been eliminated).
2. Hand-For-Hand – All Multi Table Tournaments will begin Hand-For-Hand play at ten (10) spots away from the money and resume at again based on the number of players that started the tournament. Please see the Hand-For-Hand chart for more details.
3. Time Allowed To Act – When a Multi Tables Tournament gets to ten (10) spots out of the money the time to act on each hand will be reduced from 40 seconds (20-20) to 30 seconds (20-10). The time to act will remain at 30 seconds until the tournament is completed.
4. Structure Change – The structure (levels) for Multi-Table Tournaments has been changed. Click Here to view the new structure.
5. Payout Structure Changes – The payout structure (prize payouts) has been changed for Multi-Table Tournaments. Click Here to view the new structure.

Single Table Tournaments:
Disconnect Protection – The Disconnect Protection Policy for Single Table Tournaments has been changed to allow one (1) Disconnect Protection per person, per tournament. Once a player has used that protection he will not be entitled to any further disconnect protection. Each players disconnect protection for a specific tournament will expire as soon as that tournament has ended (or that player has been eliminated).

Fold To Any Bet:
A new feature that allows a player to check/fold for entire hand has been implemented. While involved in a hand you will see a check box with the words “Fold To Any Bet” appear on the left side of the game screen. If you check this box the software will check for you (if that is an option) and fold if you do not have the option to check. The software will take this action for the duration of that hand, not just that betting round.

City Listing:
The option to mark your city ‘undisclosed’ has been removed. All players city name will be displayed as a rollover on the game screen.

February 3, 2004 - ProPoker.com up for sale.
The much criticized online poker room ProPoker.com has put itself up for sale. Although ProPoker.com entered the market before the recent boom in online poker, it was unable to accomplish the scale of growth of the other online poker sites such as Party Poker. It was scorned by many online players because many of them feared the site used "bots" - computer programs that play poker - at the site to keep the games going. Bots are feared by human players because, if programmed correctly, they can be designed to outperform a human player (or at least play good enough to minimize any potential for profit). ProPoker, established in 2002, currently has revenues of $700,000 and 15 employees and is asking to be bought out for a price of $1,200,000

January 22, 2004 - Harrah's to continue World Series of Poker
More than $20 million in official prize money is expected to be up for grabs at the 2004 World Series of Poker at Binion's Horseshoe, according to Gary Loveman, president and chief executive officer of Harrah's Entertainment, Inc. Loveman said at a press conference today that the legendary gathering that annually draws thousands of poker enthusiasts from dozens of countries to the downtown Las Vegas casino will continue this year as it has since the late casino legend Benny Binion started the tournament in 1970. The World Series of Poker, widely regarded as the most prestigious competition of its kind, has been held at Binion's Horseshoe Hotel & Casino in downtown Las Vegas since its inception. Harrah's agreed to purchase the Horseshoe after it closed earlier this month. "This tournament has a long and colorful history, and we look forward to preserving the traditions that have made it the world-renowned phenomenon it is today," Loveman said.

January 15, 2004 - Harrah's buys Binion's
It looks like a new hand's been dealt to Binion's Horseshoe in Las Vegas. Just two days after U.S. marshals raided and shut down the financially distressed casino, Harrah's Entertainment snapped it up, giving a new lease on life for the last family-owned casino in America and home of the legendary World Series of Poker . source close to the agreement. Though Harrah's is expected to re-sell the property, the acquisition will help save many of the 1,500 jobs endangered by its closure and ensure that the 2004 WSOP will go on as planned. Nevertheless, the acquisition also marks the end of an era, effectively folding the famed Binion family's run in the casino business. Further, it may also be the last WSOP to use Binion's Horseshoe as a hosting venue. Binion's has hosted the "tournament of all tournaments" since it was first started by Benny Binion in 1970. For its part in the deal, Harrah's gains what it has really been after for the past several months -- the rights to use the Horseshoe brand in the state of Nevada. And, in the process, Harrah's also picked up the rights to the WSOP.

Owning the WSOP may generate brand value, and perhaps Harrah's will use its marketing muscle creatively. Harrah's could more effectively use "Win a trip to WSOP" to promote play at its non-Las Vegas casinos. I believe Harrah's also has plans to reopen at least one poker room and perhaps others around the country, and thus could use them to offer WSOP satellite tournaments. As for the future of the WSOP itself, that's still up in the air. Though Harrah's has said it would retain the World Series, it hasn't said where it would hold it. If Harrah's re-sells the casino as expected, that would certainly lessen the chance of it being held at Binion's in 2004. Maybe it was time to move from the old, rundown joint anyway, but at least it had character in those musty, smoke-filled rooms.

January 13, 2004 - Nicole Sullivan wins Celebrity Poker Showdown
Nicole Sullivan played a queen and eight of diamonds and held on to defeat David Cross in the finale of Bravo's Celebrity Poker Showdown. The six-week tournament ended with the two-hour championship pitting the previous five winners: Sullivan, Cross, Willie Garson, Paul Rudd and Richard Schiff. Sullivan won $100,000 for Alley Cat Allies, a charity which provides neutering for cats.Cross took the runner-up $20,000 for the National Gulf War Resource Center.

January 12, 2004 - U.S. marshals raid and shut down Binion's
In a high-stakes game in which the government had no intention of losing, the Nevada Gaming Commission shut down Binion's Horseshoe over the weekend. If the name sounds familiar it's because you either have a fond recollection of when downtown Las Vegas ruled the legal gaming circuit or you recognize the establishment as the creator of World Series of Poker competition. No doubt the inspiration behind Lakes Entertainment's (Nasdaq: LACO) majority-owned World Poker Tour that thrills five million viewers on the Travel Channel every Wednesday night, you can't help but to shake your head at the poor timing. Binion's was holding a hot hand -- in terms of the publicity it stood to generate if the card game continued to grow in popularity -- but just ran out of chips to keep playing. Poker's prime time exposure should have been a major boost to the 52-year-old hotel and casino, but it apparently wasn't enough to cover some of the millions in employee benefits that had gone unpaid since June.
