Playing with real beginners

i'm taling about people who don't know how to deal holdem, how the bets are structured, what it means to check etc etc.

last night was my 'office' xmas party and they asked me to bring my chips so they could play poker. now a few people knew how to play while others claimed to know and is turned out didn't know much.

we ran a couple tourneys over the night and overall i think i'm going to cut back on my babysitting games. it's too tireing and i can't enjoy the poker.

after about the umpteenth time i had to explain that "you have to raise at least ........ ", i'm getting looks like i'm the asshole for trying to teach them to play proper poker.

should i just relax and let them play how they want? do beginners drive you crazy like they do me?

overall i came out ahead money wise but the fun level is just not there.

You have no other choice but to relax. I have played in some games like this and there's no point in trying to be "the teacher". It just kills the mood. I find it is easier to just gamble it up and get eliminated from the hand early and sit back and be bored.

In one of the random home games I went to, they played all of those crazy games (Follow the Queen , etc). where every player played every single hand. I ended up winning all of the money (since I actually folded some hands), but I ended up feeling like I stole their money. I just threw it into the pot on the last round and let the winner have it.

Personally I think donkeys are called donkeys for a reason, yes we all start out at the bottom of the totem pole but if youre not going to do anything to improve your game then whats the point of playing? I also think donkeys screw up the game unless you have only 1 donkey at your table... if your donkeys travel in groups look out! 5 calling stations completly fk the game and turns it into a complete game of luck.

At the office party: Lightin up and just go with the flow and win a little money.

At the cash game: If you get some moron in your cash game: RIP HIS FUQKING THROAT OUT!(ie; take all his money).

don't tap on the glass

I spent 15 years dealing, flooring and pitting in poker rooms all over the world. The true fish don't know they are doing anything wrong and yes it makes it very hard to put them on a hand since they don't know when they should drop a hand, rather than scaring the fish away from the pot. make it easier for yourself by finding out as much as you can about them, people donít stray away from their base personality that often if they are an adventurous person the will take more risk and the adverse is usually true. rather then telling them when they are "wrong" use these opportunities to practice your ability to read them even though it is more difficult it is no less valuable especially if it is a low limit office game. no matter what level you play at in a casino situation you will find the fish I have pushed the pot to a hand with no pair countless times at even the high limit games the trick is to read the player you are up against and every hand you play can teach you something. never forget the cards in your hand only matter if there is a showdown learning to read the fish is the most important skill you can learn so let them play and learn and use it to improve your game and don't waste your time trying to improve theirs. Good luck with your future sessions and never stop learning

I disagree. It is tricky to play against them but play it like a limit game where you use pot odds to your advantage, bet your strong draws, and don't showdown anything less than 2pair. After dragging a few monster pots they will start respecting those bets. If you are running a little hot it's easy to turn a table full of stations into a huge win. I'm new here but my last poker forum is starting to die off .
