WSOP buy-in too small?

If the field gets up to 5,500 or so (which is what I've heard it will be this year) will that be too big? With that many people, the blinds have to go up quicker or you need to lengthen out the tournament. With the tournament already being 5-6 days I dont think you can mke it longer. One solution would be to make the buy-in $25,000. One problem with that is that most people getting into the tournament today are getting in through cheap satellites online. If those tournaments are charging 2,000 people $50 for a satellite buy-in now and the cost of a WSOP entry went up to $25,000 then these $50 satellites could have 5,000 entries but still have a $50 buy-in to play one. So this might not lower the number of people entering the tournament.

In 1971, average annual salary was about $8,000. In 2003, it was about $34,500, or 4x times more. So WSOP entry should be about $40,000. At this price, I think the field would be reduced to about 1,000 players.
More important, WSOP would REALLY deserve the name of "World Championship od Poker". Because that is no longer the case today.

5,000 too much for people that have an average job like me and now your thinking of raising it.

I might be the only one who likes the large number of players. I think they should keep it all the same.

Cheapened tournament

I don't think the CASH entry fee should be higher, necessarily. However, I wouldn't object one ounce if the tournament required online sites to post a much larger entry fee for their satellite winners. This would be blatantly unfair, a complete double standard, and yet would still be the way to go, I believe.

Online entries into the series have become so widespread (and not terribly difficult to win) that they've all but "cheapened" the WSOP. What's more, the quality of players who are slipping through (and even somehow succeeding--ala Chris Moneymaker and Mattias Andersen) is deteriorating horribly. Even Greg Raymer got some spectacular cards to win--but seemed to have played at least a decent game, from what I could tell. Poker's explosive growth has been in great part due to the pervasiveness of online play, but the resultant "mean" quality of player has been brought WAY down. I think the online game, being responsible for this, should be required to account for it (by paying a higher stake to get their weak-assed players into the world's most prestigious poker event--an event that is SUPPOSED to be expensive, to keep out the riff-raff--leaving us only the very best players in our industry competing for the very top prize).

That's my thought, anyway.

PS - The first person who defends Chris Moneymaker as some kind of "great" poker player gets mooned. A trained chimp can make a 3/4 court shot, but that doesn't make him Michael Jordan. Chris Moneymaker does one thing well...he lays an excellent bluff. Good thing, too...that helps to make up for the bonehead elements of his game, of which there are plenty. He's no Daniel Negreanu, and doesn't deserve to be treated like he is.

I see no real threat to having these so called "weak-ass players" qualifying online and playing in the wsop. I welcome them with open arms! You still need to have some skill in order to win the event. Every tournament the winner has to get lucky at least a few times, but the rest is skill baby. The more dead fish that enter, the bigger the prizes are. I say come on in, the water is fresh baby! haha!

You can not charge a higher entry fee to one group of qualifiers and not have the rest of the field pay the same higher fee. This is discriminatory.

Perhaps they should begin running a series of tournies year-round, and make the WSOP invite-only. This way, the online rooms would only be able to send players to these qualifier tournies, and these players would have to prove themselves against others before the main event.

Oh yeah, if one of these online players does qualify, they can pay the main event's entry fee THEMSELVES, out of the cash won at the qualifier, if they want to play in July.

2 events

Why not just make them seperate events at the WSOP, have the $10,000 Buy in as an Open, anyone can get in, much like the current main event, just not let it be the Main Event anymore. Then make the real Main Event an Invitational. Limit it to say 1500 - 2000 players. People who do good in the Harrah's WSOP circut can qualify, past bracelet winners automatically get in. And of course the generally reguarded best players in the game

Entry By Qualifying

The entry for the WSOP Main Event should be done based on qualifying, with a format similar to the qualifying for golf's Masters or US Open, etc. The Main Event buy in should remain the same, but they should take, for example:
1) The top X number of money winners on the pro tour so far that year.
2) Anyone who has won the Main Event in the past.
3) Anyone in the last 10 years having made the final table at the Main event.
4) Anyone who won a WSOP Event the year before.
5) Anyone who finished in the top 50, 75, 100 etc. in the main event the year before.
6) Winners of select events between the last World Series and the current one, such as the WPT, etc. |
7) Each major online site should have 2-3 qualifying tournaments, each with a decent buy in, such as $250-$500 .... the top X finishers in each can go if they choose, or keep their money. No more every single day online $40 qualifier.
8) Every major casino in the US and Europe can have a championship tournament, with the top few finishers from each getting in.

Something like this would allow mmany people to get in but guarantee no goofballs, and would necessitate people truly earning their way in.

free-for-all

What makes the WSOP special is that it is a free-for-all with anyone and I do mean anyone can try to win. The fee has no meaning any more. What makes it so special is that in order to even make it to the final table you have to have some skill. Luck will only get you so far. The publicity from WSOP has made poker what it is. Why change/kill it?

I do think that WPT (or some thing like that) needs to think about players not how to make as much money as they can for the casinos. Players need better ranking and to be paid for the TV time like on the PGA. The poker world need to change/mature to become more like a sport, not like many people think of it as just luck.

Exclamation poker stars is a rip off (spell checked version!!)

I have never seen the crazy hands in real life games like I see at poker stars. They are about revenue. No big hands no big revenue for them. I have played them with $25 dollar buy in 5 times and see to much crazy crap. Save your money for a real game. Just play the play money. The convenience of home play is not worth it. If you do play do the bare minimum.

Best thing about WSOP is that any one can sit down next to a world champ. You cant play golf against tiger woods. I sick of hearing these poker snobs whine about the low quality of players in this event. To be a good player, you have to learn to beat bad players. If you want to be a robot, go play blackjack and stick to the formula. Joseph Hachem won wsop with a 3 7 off suit. If an internet player did this we'd never hear the end of it. Get over it, shut up & let your chips speak for you. I'm a pretty ordinary poker player, but hell yes, I'm saving up ten grand to get to wsop in 2 years time. I hope i can beat some good players with bad hands. That's poker, baby.

Your right on. The old timers can't win with so many new players. They would like things to stay as they are. The fact they are crying raise the fee is one reason not too. They were average players making a living on poker. Now the field is getting bigger and they are smarter scares them.

If you raised the fee the pot sizes would goto sht, and nobody would care. There goes the TV rights and all the others with it!

And too the Crazy French, If everything went up 4x or more nobody will by it. Then your stuck with a product you can't sell to anybody. What a retard.

Just because they don't complain doesn't mean they are unhappy. People who are successful don't complain - they make changes and adapt to problems. I haven't heard any pros complain either but I have heard many pros like Ivey come out and say it is way more advantagous now to play cash games than tournaments. Alot of the pros initially talked back in 2004 about all the dead money and how juicy the tournaments were but they quickly found out that if you play 10-20 big tournaments a year against 5,000 donkeys that a few bad beats can lead to a breakeven year.

The 50,000 HORSE event is already being talked about as being the new world championship. This is a better way to determine who is the best "poker player since 6 different games are played. the current main event, will eventualy just be what it is, The NO Limit champion only.

they already charge 50000 for horse. 10000 is str8. it aint about the money this yrs champ won 12000000. that is insane for six days. no need to raise it. it is alot of wannabes who want to test there skill/luck against the pros so let em have it. that is what makes poker. its nice to see that upset. its kinda like watching a gonzaga or rutgers win a national championship. it is the thrill of the upset.
