The character of Lester "Worm" Murphy in Rounders is played by Edward Norton. Norton said that the image he created for Worm was . . .

"Bugs Bunny dressed as Keith Richards. Like Bugs, he's a merry prankster who has this chaotic impulse. He's always scheming and staying just two steps ahead of a sound beating, but kind of laughing as he goes and never taking anything too seriously".

Matt Damon and Edward Norton played in the 1998 World Series of Poker Main Event at Binion's in 1998. They were sponsored by Binion's because Binion's thought it might bring some good publicity to the tournament. They both lasted half way through the first day before being eliminated. Norton held a full house and lost to a player with four tens.

Neither Matt Damon nor Edward Norton had played serious poker before and were coached pretty intensely for a period of about three months to prepare for the movie. After filming Rounders, Edward Norton had this to say about poker:

"I have great respect for the game of poker. I would never call poker gambling anymore. I would equate it much more with chess and other games of skill, games that require multi-level strategic, mathematical or psychological skills. For those who play seriously there's no luck involved, at all. Entering that tournament that Matt and I played in Vegas was the equivalent of us entering Wimbledon. We were getting beaten soundly by far, far suprior players at a game of skill."

COMMENTS:

Edward Norton is one of the best actors ever. I loved him in "American History X". I love almost any movie this guy is in.

we'll, it's about time we include a mechanic in this list. though les murphy(worm)was eventully busted by those country bumpkin cops, he still had skill. it takes stones to deal the punch, double duke the way he did. he may be a fictional character but his aura remains. as a mechnic myself, our profession gets frowned upon.
