Am i just unlucky? or unskilled?

Hi

Ive played poker now for about 4 months on and off (I work a full time job). Recently i have had some pretty bad beats due to experimenting and thinking i have found a table full of smaller fish. To my surprise generally I find myself a smaller fish compared to these ppl.
How long did it take you guys and gals to master the basics etc of Poker?
I know the basics I just struggle to recognise the signs that my opponants have better or worse cards than me.

Thank you

If you are talking about the REAL basics, they can be learned within the first couple of sessions if you sit down with a hand chart and condition yourself to play the right hands.

Sounds like you need to use hand selection and position a whole lot more. You have to be mindful of what you are entering pots with, and your position in the betting rounds. if you are playing a full ring game, you should be extra cautious in the first 4 positions after the big blind. Meaning you should only be playing large pocket pairs, or AK,AQ,AJ,KQ,K10, unless you know enough about the players and what they are playing. You can be more liberal closer to the button, widen those hands to suited connectors or 1 gappers......You just need to be mindful of your position and tempermants of who is in the hand.
A great book for you to read to get you on the right track is " Caros Most Profitable Hold-Em Advice" I promise you take the time to read it and implement its teachings you will turn yourself around and start showing profits

Only a small % of online players are winners. Poker is perceived as being easy, thats why lots of people try it.

i find my biggest mistake is thinking that just because i raised 4 times the blind that the garbage hands will fold. i find that is not true. there are way too many players that play any 2 cards preflop then if they hit even a pair of 2s they are incapable of folding. last friday we had a preflop all in of 2100 called by a player with a 62 off suit blinds were 150 and 300. he lost and was angry. i am still baffled why he was angry. so it has more to do with who you play not what you play. but try to play big cards and pairs and in the long run you will do better.

in poker there is always gonna be winners and losers. YOU have to decide for yourself which you are gonna be, first...you must be able to recognize a game that you can win and a game that is not winnable for your skill level. second...you have to learn when to play aggressive and when to play passive, when to play and when to fold, when to call and when to be the bettor

I find a lot of players out there are trying to out play or out think the other players. This works great if you have all read the same books and have the same knowledge of the game.I play 5 nights a week and i see some really good players walk away broke because they feel they can out play everyone.

I don't try to out think, or out play. I believe poker is a game of luck. No matter what cards I have somebody will call and hit on the river.

They have done it again. If I get a pocket pair somebody has a bigger one or hits a rag picture. I WON when playing for play money, but when nickels and dimes are on the line the cards turn against me. I play the same way but for some reason the cards turn against me when money is on the line. I can only conclude Luck is the name of the game.

ever heard of VARIANCE(or what you ppl call LUCK).. want to lower it.. get it in good in a cash game, and then run the turn/river multiple times. 3 is a good suggested number. get it in on the flop being a favor, hard to get sucked out on 3 times... in general ppl who are behind will love the fact you want to "give them" a chance at their money back when you get it in and they are behind..

Are you playing on-line, in a casino, or in a home game?
