Thoughts on Chris Ferguson's $0-$20K Challenge

I've recently set myself the Ferguson challenge with a slight difference, i'm grinding $10-$20,000 instead of starting with zilch. My current bankroll is fluctuating around $2000 2 months in, so it's going in the right direction. Anyone else tried, or is trying this challenge or similar? Post any thoughts on how long it should take, bankroll management, best/worst sites, and any advice to achieving my goal.

I've never done a "challenge" but when I played I kept a spreadsheet of every session I ever played. So keep good stats. Note game levels. Separate bonuses from game profits. Some people like to track particular days as well as time of day but just the basics should be good.

As far as making money, I would say to stick to juicy games.

As far as bankroll management, I would never switch up until I had at least 300BB of the new level and I was consistently beating the current level.

Bankrolls doin good, at about $2320 and swinging. Had to change from sit n go's to cash due to lack of traffic and am looking for some good pro cash game books, any recommendations? Just ordered the harrington cash books but was also looking for some more advanced insightments as even the $0.5/$1 tables seem pretty tough.

Bankroll is still alive!! Took a nose dive and ended up banking out $1500 and starting from $200 again and peaked it at $3370, but just taken a $500 drop in 2 days. Pretty gross but it was due, AA cracked 4 times in a row, wahya gonna do? Couple of hands to pitch, both in .5/$1 cash games. Second one not overly proud of, been watching a bit too much of Tom Dwan on poker after dark i think. Tell me what you think:
************************************************** *********
1. 6 seat cash
Guy in seat 2 playing solid game, the big blind been very loose preflop and I get AQ in small blind

Seat 2($100) Raise $3
I call($100)
Big Blind($79) calls

Flop: Ac 10h 5h pot:$9

I check
BB checks
Seat 2 raises $6
I reraise to $16
BB calls
Seat 2 folds

Turn: Kd pot:$47

I raise $50
BB folds
************************************************** *****
2. 6 Seat cash
Actions been quite tight, and I pick up 6h7h in the cut off

I ($120) raise $3
Button folds
SB($200) reraises $9.50
BB ($150)calls
I call

Flop: Kd 3c 3h pot= $28.50

SB checks
BB checks
I bet $16
SB calls
BB folds

Turn: Js pot= $60.50

SB checks
I bet $22
SB reraises to $66
I fold

************************************************** *******

Not saying the 2nd was text book play, but wondered if betting at weakness like this would either profit or break even whilst promoting an image likely to be paid off? Maybe he had JJ and i got unlucky, maybe he had KK and played me for a sucker, all thoughts and suggestions welcome.

Thanks Admin, you still care lol. At $5200 just recovered it from a $1k downswing, all is going well but still in chartered terrotory. Ive changed my plan from Fergusons 20 buyin up to Wasika's 35 buyin plan, cos i tilt like a motha. Much easier to take the inevitable 15 buyin downswing without spinning the rest on red now.

Still got problems with my cash game, may be variance maybe im a pay off wizard but its been a nightmare. At the same stake the sitngo's im playing are riddled with fish and am quite surprised they get unpopular at around $300+, it seems that after my bankroll gets to $10,000 i'll be forced on to cash games cos the only sitngo's higher are turbo's and they can't be profitable surely.

Last night i had flush under flush twice, QQ under AA(manged to lose min somehow) would say this just happens but this always seems to happen with cash games, just cold deck after cold deck! I hope this is just a bit of bad luck but my cash game stats are disastrous. Trying to emulate ferguson's and Laak's tight game to try and get on top of the cold decks but dont seem to be working. Any way the downswing last night left me at about $4800.

Tilted like mad, curing it today with a day off poker, a swim, jacuzzi and a pint and it has done the trick, hopefully will be a more cheer full post next time.

Pokers been showing me it's sickest side last 2 weeks, broke even for 2 weeks before jumping up a nice $600. Next session I played 2 tables with a guy heads up, and ive never seen anything like it. I have bad beats and colddecks but for 1.5 hours, this guy made the correct moves EVERY time, it was crazy cos i mix my game up so much. I made 3 big river bluffs and 16 river value bets and he made the right move on all 19. It was how i would imagine a game with Daniel Negreanu, so crazy i reported the name to support just in case something dodgy was goin on, but came back negative, i had just experinced the most severe variance in a sngle game ive had in 6 years of playing.
Distraught, pi**ed off, I wander into a game 3 hrs later, my confidence shattered and as a result, played like crap, left it for the day down $750. The next day start playing and in 3.5 hours, I rocket up $1012, fricken timing!!! Any tilt vanished and playing like a demon again!

Current bankroll is $7,901, looking good but going way over time limit cos I ground 200-2000 then started again from 200. Difficult juggling bills and a bankroll, pain in the arse taking money out, trying not to touch it.

Lesson of the day. Dont let a few bad sessions knock your confidence, stop for the day cos if youre playing well, it all comes back with interest. If i had stopped for the day, i'd be up bout $110 more than i am right now. Peace

BANKROLL $7233.20 (peak $8400)

Well, it took just just over a week for the cold run to back, AND IT'S BACK WITH AVENGANCE!!! Try not to moan too much but gotta let it out. It's 'the perfect storm' of all bad runs, and im still smack bang in the middle of it. The amount of cold decks and bad beats is at a level that most realistic people plain wouldnt believe and can totally understand why so many players think its rigged, 72hrs of utter inhialation of my bankroll. The most common beat in this bad run that has happened a whopping 6 times in 3 days is me flopping board trips top kicker, playing it fast on the flop, then opponants pocket pair spiking house on the turn, Im a rag-dole after that, most the moneys in and no way out, 6 times is sick, and thats just one example, the gut shots and plain COLD decks have been off the scale, a ridiculous 3 days and its still going strong.

I just finished a heads up cash game, playing 2x$50 and this hand came up, I was 80% sure i was beat cos how it played out and the fact that this opponant was tight as they come helped, but still called, this was the hand.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
ME($60)
Opp($50)

Hand QK
i raise to $1
Opp reraises to $3.50
i call, pot($7)

FLOP K K 3

Opp bets $3.50
i call(to make my turn raise look like a steal) pot($14)

TURN 9

Opp bets $8
i call (suspicious of his big bet + if he's bluffing, keep digging!) pot($30)

RIVER 5

Opp checks
i bet $16
Opp reraises all in another $17
i call

Opp shows 99 for a full house
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Now even though Im 80% sure im beaten, i only need to be right 20% to brake even, my thoughts were 'im beaten, im getting 4 to 1 on a call, his river reraise almost certainly means he's got it, but is there a 20% chance he's (a)crazy bluffing (b) shoved AA to get value if i have JJ type hand (c)shoving K with weaker kicker. I obviously I thought yes!

Any way since the poker gods picked me to be their chew toy for the last 3 days it has cost me $1500, ugh sick, and my bankroll stands at around $7k, so still standing strong aslong as this storm ends now! Worst part about it is that ive been playing probably the best poker of my life this week, managed to fold J high flush to Nut flush and my sick calls and bluffs are spot on, just been plain unlucky. I may have tilted slightly but dont think I donked much away, my main concern in these train wreck situation is to 'LOSE THE LEAST' just as important as winning the most in a situation.

I still keep taking money out my freaking bankroll which sucks, theres a real catch22 when building a bankroll. If you work, it grows to slow, if you play poker 24/7 you aint got no money to live on, so you bank out, and the bankroll still grows slow. Dying to up the stakes again but being held back by this, still, great getting the experience!

HOOOHARRRR BOYYYEEE!!!!! WOW, POKER IS TESTING ME THIS WEEK!!!!, every game is swinging me between $350-$700, pokerstars is dealing some crazy hands and it is crusifying my bankroll and my nerves. 25c/50c heads up and lost $500 in 1 hour!!!!!! As a huge favourite or coinflip in each pot, how does that even happen? lol, gotta laugh or im gonna cry so $1500 downswing.....HAHAHA! If I was using Chris Ferguson's bankroll management my bankroll would be extinct by now, thank christ im only playing 3%, I swear by it!!!

This is what seperates pro's and mediocre players, getting through this period losing the least, and clambering back up on any oppotunity possible. Another way ive softened the blows is to use my badluck in a positive way, speed up my game without out truely being on tilt, play fast literally, making snap reraises, the fact they think youre on tilt can get you even pretty quick if you employ this without going over the edge.

Day 4 of the sickest poker ive seen in a long time and my bankroll stands at $7,370, alive and kicking baby yeahhhhh!

Dear god I swear someone having me on! 4 days of the most horrendous colddecks and badbeats, u just wouldnt belive me cos its statiscally near impossible. So i go back to that casino rule of 'if u got an edge keep playing and you will win eventually', with this in mind i sit down for an hour of 2x$50 heads up, in this hour Ive had QQ under AA, JJ under AA, trips cracked by gutshot, trip 88 cracked by 44 board 8 5 2 6 7 pot betting all the way, runner runner ffs. Seriously what is going on! My last hand of yesterday before i cracked and gave up was 1010 vs 55, flop 10 8 5, all inned turn 5, f&*kng 1 outer!!!!

5 days and it just isnt letting up, can't believe a streak like this is even possible at this level. Yeah pros have bad months but thats playing against other card-geniuses, not against joe bloggs coming home from work and fancying a game. Just crazy.

Hand that really pissed me off yesterday was against a really tight opponant that rarely semi-bluffed and was always concious of the board cards, I tried to make a really clever play and bad luck just blew it up in my face, so sick, .5/1 HU:
I had A6 raised to $2, opponant calls. Flop come 4c 5d 7c. He checks, i raise $2 he reraise $8, I call. Turn is 8h, made my straight, YES!!! Then my TIGHT opponant raises pot $20. My thoughts were 'if he has 69, he's got me, im paying it off. He's bet pot when a dangerous card came up, because i called the flop raise it's obv to him that I have a 6, so he has to have a 6. Whats the best possible way to play this if we are splitting this pot? PRETEND IM DRAWING TO THE FLUSH!!!!' So, i put my play into action, calling $20 and hoping a club hits the river so i can represent the flush. River Kc, AWSOME!! I put him all in hoping he mucks his 6 then he turns over Ac10c, WTFF!!!!!!!!! Was so god damn proud of the thought process I went through on that that play and he's had the freakin flush draw the whole time and bleedin hit it!!

Not one session in 5 days hasnt been brutal or crazy in some way, lost $1800 but made back $200. The bankroll stands at $$6,906. It can't take much more of this and nore can I. Really hope I can just get back on track without going broke or insane.

Seriously considering the integrity of pokerstars RNG , i know ive grinded this up and it looks like im jus moaning cos of 5 days bad luck, but come on, this 5 day bad streak defies odds. That is all.......

Fraid not VA, grabbed $600 back of the $2k downswing only to have it taken straight back in cold decks and bad beats, 4%ers and Kflush under Aflush, that general area. Tilted to the max and gonna give it break for a few days. Worst run ever

Sorry man, sounds brutal. If I were you I would give it more than a few days off. Almost 100% of the time we run as bad as you are runnning now, it has a negative impact on our play, which only compounds the problem and makes it that much more difficult to win. We start to overprotect hands and think that our J high flush is beaten by a bigger flush even though we are using both our hole cards. Basically just playing scared because we know we can't possibly win a pot. At that point, the dealer and ourselves become our biggest opponents, and we lose sight of our actual opponents.

If I were you, I'd stay away until I was just dying to come back. The first few days off you will probably just be happy to be away from the grind. Eventually, however, your hunger for the game will come back whether it be in 6 days or 2 weeks. The best strategy is just to wait until that desire comes back, you won't play your best until it does and you can't put a timeframe on when it will happen.

A lot of winning players assume that anytime they sit down at a table it is +EV, because they are overall winners. They think for winning players, more hands ALWAYS equals more profit. This, in my opinion, is very untrue. Anytime you sit at a table tired, uninterested, tilted, drunk, etc. your EV is probably negative, even if you usually win at 25bb/100H. So people force themselves to play thinking it will mean more money in the longrun. What they are really doing is just digging holes that they are going to have to patch up with their winning sessions. I'm self employed and my business doesn't take up more than 4 or 5 hours a day so I try to put in about 4 or 5 hours a day playing poker as well, both for enjoyment and to supplement my income. I am certainly +EV at the stakes I play, but if I don't feel up to playing even in the slightest bit, I just don't play. I only play when I'm really dying to play(which is almost everyday) because I know my "A" game is the only one I can really count on winning with.

Anyway, I hope you go back to playing at a time that suits you and you go in with a clear head knowing you can't run bad forever. Keep us posted, I've enjoyed hearing about your progress.

Ps. I forgot to mention this but its and important point. I read your last post where you said that you got $600 back of your losses, then lost all that back again. That is really not a good way to think about it, right now you are thinking about it as if you are in the hole 2k and you need to get it back somehow. You need to let go of that 2K downswing and realize that wherever your roll is now, thats where it is. Players often do that in certain games, they are down 2-3 buyins and they frantically try to get them back. I once heard that everytime the cards are being shuffled, you are even, your roll is exactly where it is and you can't do anything about the past. I try to remember that in every losing session.

My bad luck has continued but seem to still be grinding profitable sessions. I can definately say that I can put a few hundred in losses down to bad play due to tilt, it shouldnt happen at all but losing 1 or 2 buyins to steam isn't the worst thing to happen to my bankroll. True words though VA, having some time off is the best way to be mostly playing your A game and your bankroll is what it is, instead of seeing 2k down, i have to see 6.8k up, the glass is half full and all that.

Funny thing is I predicted this tidal wave 1 week before it happened, not because im pesamistic but because of a sentence I read in 'The maths of poker' which said that if you remove money from your bankroll on a regular basis, you are 99.99...% to go broke. I say ive got a $6,850 but I have removed $3k of that to pay bills and live etc. This downswing wasnt just bad luck but imminent. However good you are you wont get away from the fact that you will definately swing down atleast 20 buyins at some point, it's a question of when.

Ive had a day off, mostly due to an epic hangover, but back on it again tomorrow. Im loving heads up cash games at mo, and totally found why previously I had being doing quite badly. If you look up the stats of everyone sat waiting at heads up .5/1 tables, 90% of them are up thousands, all the best players wait there, now I sit on an empty table and wait for players to sit with me and usually they will be a donkey. This has helped soooo much and answered that niggling question of why I suck at headsup! I had been sitting with poker geniuses the whole time.

Am certain I won't hit my $20k in 8 months now, but am pretty sure I will get there this year or early next, just been a change in plans and need to get a job so I stop taking money out my bankroll.

I got a question for you. Seeing that you are grinding it out and playing a medium-sized bankroll, risk plays a large part in your results. Obviously, most players (including you) take risk into consideration when it comes to bankroll size to choosing limits.

But I was wondering if you take into consideration the riskiness of your actual playing style. I ask this because, when I played full-time at low limits, I played a tighter version than what would have given me the optimal profit because I took into consideration the risk-adjusted profit. Instead of making 3BB/hour and suffering big swings by making marginal bets, I would make about 2BB/hour and have much smaller swings.

I'm not saying you should change, I was just curious.

At low stakes (and some higher stake SNG's) because of the abundance of calling stations I'd favour the tighter game because there's no need to project an image if they'll pay you off anyway, so tight is probably the max profit anyway, coupled with less variance and you got a winner. This is in practice, but in theory, if you make 3/BB in one style and 2/BB in another, always favour the 3/BB but adjust your bankroll to cope with the swings. The cards will do what they want but at the end of the year it's like your boss asking if you want to be payed $20k or $30k, gotta go for maximum profit.

When it comes to my bankroll, im not even in the same ballpark as Chris Ferguson, I usually have around 35-40 buyins, for 2 reasons.
1. The epic downswing is always just around the corner, don't want to go broke.
2. When that swing hits, whats gonna happen to your game when you see that your bankrolls been inhialated, TILTMANIA!!

Suppose you have $2k using fergusons 5% rule and had a swing like i just had, you would have around $600 left!!! Don't know about you but I'd probably stick that on red in a rage. So playing a smaller percentage of your roll eleviates oober-tilt, puts risk of ruin to a minimum, and allows you to play your most profitable game.

Clawed a wee bit back today(sorry VA, i meant 'im up today!')
Bankroll stands at $7050

Wow wow wow, Ok im taking my withdrawn funds of $3200 off the total and my bankroll stands at $3050. I just get more and more gob-smacked at how long this bad streak i9s lasting, outdraws in every session for huge pots. Ive now had to drop my stakes down to NL50, just played a game, dudes outdrawing left right and centre but im folding before the pot gets too big, then on the turn, opponant puts me all in, i call with Kd3d he has QcJc, board 10dQcKc 4d BANG!! the club losing $170, doesnt sound alot but in NL50, its a bad suckout.

I hate moaning but there is no other topic with my game at the moment, I just can't stop losing bleeding money, heartbreaking cos im playing so freakin well at the moment and getting people in such bad shape, and it's just kicking my arse every single time.

When I run bad I break even, when I run REALLY bad I lose money, Ive been losing money for over a month now. How long can this bad streak last for? Makes me so uneasy to see so many bad beats when it's not a real set of cards.

On the plus side a havent smoked all day, somehow.

Later that day.....opponent has trips 6+ times that i know of, quads, flush over flush TWICE!!!, degectedly sit down an hour later, 2 hands!!!! and im done, AcQc vs 4h8s 3xraise preflop then all in on flop 4c 7c 7x, miss as the favourite flip, then next hand KK vs 88 all in preflop, 4 2 8. Sorry but in over 16000 im down 24 buyins, this just isnt right, ive been playing so well, and been a favourite or coinflip 95% of the time. Have decided to change site cos just not feeling that this kind of run is legitimate. So pissed off cos this is the reason im withdrawing, very dissappointing. Starting up again on ipoker and hopefully things will pick up, damn it htis just isnt cricket!

Buck22,

From your posts I gather that you are predominantly a cash game player. When you switch to Ipoker, maybe you should try to play some tournaments and sit n go's. The reason I say this is that a horrible run like you've been on inevitably impacts your play in a negative manner. That is why temporarily switching formats may be beneficial to you. As you know, tournament poker and cash games require a much different strategy. Therefore, when you are competing in tournaments, your recent bad run will be less likely to effect your play. Also, I've heard you tell many of these "rigged" conspiracy theorists that instead of complaining its rigged they should analyze their own play. I'm not trying to critisize your play in the least as I would have no basis to do so. I'm just saying you should analyze your play really thoroughly and atleast open up to the idea that your unlucky streak has caused some sort of leak in your game that has enabled the streak further. Again, I'm not trying to critisize your play, but you have admitted that you used to be one of these "rigged" guys until you worked hard to improve your game, I'd hate to see you digress. I played live poker for over 10 years before I played one hand online and I can assure you that horrible runs like yours happen live as well as online. They are usually a little more severe online because the style of play online leads to much higher variance which means runs of luck in both directions. If you are 100 BB deep live and all the money gets in it is almost certainly set over set or AAv.KK. Online 200BB pots are much more normal and because of that even solid players like yourself have to put thier whole stack in with a much wider range, leading to more variance and violent swings at times. Anyway, good luck on Ipoker, hope things turn around for you.

Im playing HU cash and 6 seat tournys, ive dropped stakes so not impacting on my game, i admit to the mega-tilt and am ashamed. Yeah, deep down i dont believe the rigged conspiracy theorys but when you've played your best poker and lose as bad as i have for 40 days straight, just want something to blame it on temporarely. Thanks for your post VA , you are the voice of reason!

Learnt alot about poker in last 9 months of playing solidly, my recent lesson is that if you want to support yourself playing, you really need 6 months of paid bills + bankroll of 33 buyins or more, which takes time and commitment to achieve and can't really be done in 8 months with $10.

4 days off well needed!! Been a bit pissed off cos only got 6 months to grind the 20k i needed but did the maths and think it might be possible still. Playing .25/.5 , .5/1 , 1/2 , 2/4 running at 6,6,4,3BB/100 respectively, should be able to hit $20,000 with 6 months hard grinding. Got a good lead of $380 for today starting off my new challenge of grinding $3k - $20k ,this time im not banking out a dime!

For my .5/1 HU cash games ive been running at about 8-10BB/100 over 15,000 hands, think hunting out the bad players is what it is due to. So im sure i can run at 6BB for .25/.5 and .5/1 but 1/2 and 2/4 is uncharted territory for me so I just reason that either i hit these targets or I shouldn't be playing these higher levels, we'll see over the next few months. Just used my stars points to buy into 2 WCOOP events so that should be fun, wish me luck!
