Born in 1974, in New York City, John Myung is a Korean American poker player living in the Washington, DC suburb of Rockville, Maryland.
Myung graduated from Cornell University and planned on going to medical school. After deciding he didn't want to become a doctor, he took a job at Morgan Stanley on the 73rd floor of the World Trade Center but quit his job just days before the September 11, 2001 attacks to take another job on Wall Street. He began playing poker after moving to Rockville, Maryland.
Myung is best known as the winner of the 2003 Showdown at the Sands tournament, where he won $1 million, defeating 196 other players, including a final table that also had T. J. Cloutier, Daniel Negreanu and Mike Matusow.
He has cashed 4 times in WPT events, including a $135,102 payout during season 6 and a $187,500 payout during season 7.
As of 2009, Myung has also cashed 13 times in the WSOP, with his best cash being a 3rd place in the 2005 $2,000 limit hold'em event where he earned $83,755. His total WSOP earnings are $183,026. As of 2008, his total live tournament winnings exceed $1,700,000.
