Carlos Mortensen

Nicknamed "El Matador", Carlos Mortensen is a professional poker player and the winner of the 2001 World Series of Poker main event.

Born in 1972 in Ecuador, Mortensen moved to Spain when he was 15-years old. While working in a private club one night, he noticed some customers playing Texas no-limit hold'em and joined in. After playing in regular poker games and building his skills, he quit his bartending job to play poker full-time in local clubs in Spain.

After moving to Atlantic City in the late 1990's with his then-wife to be closer to the big money poker games in the U.S., Mortensen worked hard at both playing poker and learning English. After the expected adjustment period went by, he began to become successful in both cash games and tournaments.

After winning some smaller tournaments, Mortensen won the 2001 WSOP main event and the $1.5 million.

He won a second WSOP bracelet in the 2003 $5,000 Limit Hold'em event, earning $251,680.

In season 2 of the WPT he finished 4th in the Borgata Poker Open, earning $1,000,000.

In season 3 he won his 2nd WPT title in the Doyle Brunson North American Championship, earning $3,970,415, becoming the first player to ever win the World Championship events at both the WSOP and the WPT.

Mortensen also cashed in the World Heads-Up Poker Championship, and was a semi-finalist in the second season of the Poker Superstars Invitational Tournament.

At the 2006 WSOP, Mortensen made 3 final tables - including a second place finish in the Razz tournament, earning him $94,908.

He also cashed in the 2007 WSOP Main Event, finishing 217th and earning $51,398, and the 2007 European Poker Tour main event in Monte Carlo, finishing 11th.

In 2006, he and his wife, fellow poker player Cecilia Reyes Mortensen, were divorced.

As well as bring the only Hispanic WSOP main event winner, Mortensen is also considered the last professional poker player to win the main event.

Mortensen has 12 WPT cashes, 2 WSOP bracelets, 18 WSOP cashes, As of 2009, his total live tournament winnings exceed $8,700,000.

Eres el mejor, un crack, cada vez que veo la final se me ponen los pelos de punta.Sigue demostrando lo que vales y enseñales a los yankis lo que vale un español.
Un saludo.

Very nice hair plugs. They usually look obvious and downright horrible but whoever did them did a great job. The show I saw on FSN he was way too aggressive and on the verge of elimination but fortunately the cards went his way and he bounced back. Imagine that. Luck. Skill my a**. A very talented player to be sure but tournaments are total crapshoots.

I seem to recall him winning the WPT Doyle Brunson event as well. I remember seeing Mr. Brunson and also Daniel Negreanu in the audience, and I remember they both cheered when Carlos won. I also remember Carlos' wife doing a waist/shake/cha-cha-cha thing too. Doesn't seem like that was a bad win to me. ;)

TheCid on June 11, 2005

Great player! Loved when he was in that hand with David Oppenheim. CM called the 4000$ BB with A3. DO raised to 23000$ with 72, and CM instantly reraised to 75000$ DO thaught it over, and then CM says: "If u fold i show u". DO says: "Ok, i'll let this one go" and CM shows him only the 3.. :)))

juub on June 5, 2005

i think he used to sell cars actually i hear he is a great poker theorist, this from people who know what they are talking about. but i've played him a few times and i'm not sure if he's 'great' he's mega aggresive and unafraid to gamble, if he gets on tilt he plays real unsound

He needs to take his winnings and fix the gap in his t e e t h.

Dirk Diggler on May 17, 2005

Just because you are cocky doesn't make you less of a player. Carlos is definitly one of my all time favorites.

Kelly on April 23, 2005

Yes Great win for Carlos..did you also notice all of the other professionals rooting for him? He must be well none and respected in the poker world. This guy is cool...like his style and a great great poker player. We can all take lessons from this guy.

Unregistered on April 3, 2005

He's the original Matador. Unless you've won a WSOP you really can't say anything about his style of play. It has worked for him enough to be a successful pro. Chad makes a great point as well saying that he was the last pro to win it (on a flush and straight draw no less!!!). You have to love Carlos and what hes done for the game. As for him not winning anything lately...the last I heard of Phil Hellmuth was on a Tilt episode. Alot of pros have their spells I'm not saying Carlos is on one but he's certainly not the only superstar missing from the lime light.

Galactico on April 2, 2005

How about the Doyle Brunson Championship on WPT. Pocketed a cool Million. If that's not a great win, I don't know what is.

bender2004 on April 2, 2005

Wow!!! Awesome skill, great instincts and fearless. One of the best players in the world

Dirk Diggler on March 1, 2005

That was the last time that a pro won the WSOP was when he won in 2001.

Chad on February 10, 2005

I think that Carlos is an underated player. I think he is one of the top 5 No limit holdem pros.

Justy on February 8, 2005

I like this guy..great poker player and I like his style.

someone on December 29, 2004

Guess who just won the North American Doyle Brunson WPT event at Bellagio? Yep, Carlos. Against a final table of Juanda, Seidel, and David the Dragon. It'll be televised for Season 3 WPT.

guy. on October 23, 2004

he came to the final table as the chip leader. He played well against David but he made a bad mistake in the all-in by the rookie and then was absolutely owned by Nori. He's fun to watch but gets so emotional that he makes mistakes.

pkm on October 3, 2004

He just made a final table at the WPT and played really well.

Uhh on October 2, 2004

i would rather see moneymaker at a final table than this freak, abc i know allot about this guy and what i have to say is not made up!!!!!!!!!

your mo on July 11, 2004

How many of these comment have to do with that fact he;'s not American  Carlos is a talented risk taking action player, and great fun to watch.

Jon on July 11, 2004

I don't care if he's from another planet, answer me this what has Carlos he won lately? Next thing You'll tell me Varcony is your hero too. Oh and rob is american.

Rich on July 11, 2004

ABC name three final tables hes been to this year. You can't oh i see, what he hasn't, What hes broke overplaying every hand. Huck seed is his brother what?

RICH on July 10, 2004

One of my faves.

Carlos Rules on June 30, 2004

You guys really tickle me. You make all these remarks out of shear jealousy. No other reason to make up stories about people other than that. He is a good player. Get over it. Oh yeah, Poker is a game of THOUGHT. Not speed. Take as much time as you need to make the right call. If it gets on your nerves? All the better. Especially when you verbally acknowledge it at the table. I am going to continue to do it just to annoy you and get in your head. ROFLMAO

abc on June 27, 2004

hmmmm, i won a tourney in spain. got lucky at commerce and same month won wsop, bad player if you ask me, thinks too much

your mo on June 25, 2004
