Teddy "KGB"

Teddy "KGB," was the Russian Mobster played by John Malkovich who ran an illegal underground poker room in Rounders. He loved munching on Oreo cookies and spoke with a Russian accent that defied deciphering.

Rumor has it that Rounders screenwriters David Levien and Brian Koppelman based the character of KGB on a guy named Eddie Pollak that they met while doing research for the movie. Pollak was an expert backgammon, chess and poker player who emigrated from Russia in the early 1980s. He was an officer in the Russian Army, where it is believed that he learned how to play cards. Because of his thick Russian accent, Eddie was given the nickname "Teddy KGB" by New York underground gamblers. It was written in the NY Post that Pollak passed away a few years ago, succumbing to heart failure.

Ya know I don't get this guy. After he flops the nuts with 24 and Mike folds A5 (top 2 pair) Mike says "I'm laying that down because you have 24 and I'm not going to draw against a made hand". Yet the very last hand KGB says "You're on a draw Mike" and continues to bet into him. What a short memory KGB must have. I did love his accent though. Rouners was a great movie

That ace comes out on the river, he slowly lays it down and says "It hurts doesn't it?" BTW I like to use that line when i have a value hand and i think someones drawing to a flush or something like that and that third suited card doesnt come out. I also like to say it when I'm bluffing and want to get the other guy to lay down.

The real question that bugs the hell out of me is: What did KGB have on that last hand where mikey flopped the nut str8? I have debated this many times with my friends at our home game. My guess is he had pocket aces again.

John is a genius. That is quite possibly the greatest accent in movie history. I wish he was playing Dick Van Dyke instead of Matt Damon. That would have been class...

Malcovich is terrible at accents. I think it's 'cause he speaks his own so strangly. He's a good actor, though he should stay away from accents.
