John Phan is a Vietnamese-American professional poker player based in California who is a two time World Series of Poker bracelet winner.
Born in 1974 in Vietnam, but raised in Stockton, California, John Phan learning to play poker from his father and brother. He worked hard to improve his skills as he got older and had enough success in cash games and won enough small tournaments in California that he considered going pro.
Phan cashed 5 times and won 2 events at The Jack Binion World Poker Open in 2004 - the $500 Limit Hold'em event for $160,965 and the $500 Pot-Limit Hold'em event for $85,257.
In 2004 he also won the $3,000 No-Limit Hold'em event at the Festa al Lago II, earning $189,900.
In 2005 he won the $2,425 No-Limit Hold'em event at the 2005 L.A. Poker Classic for $300,578. He also made a WPT final table at the $25,000 WPT World Championship at the Bellagio during season 3 and finished in 4th for over $518,920.
Phan made the final table of the $5,000 Seven-card stud event in the 2005 WSOP.
In 2006 Phan finished 2nd to Marcel Luske in the $3,000 No-Limit Hold'em event at the Five-Star World Poker Classic for $179,195.
In 2006 Phan cashed in four tournaments at the WSOP, including a finishing second in the $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em event, earning $289,389.
In 2007 he finished 2nd in the WSOP $2,500 No Limit Hold'em event, earning $330,846.
In 2008, Phan won his first bracelet after winning the $3,000 No-Limit Hold'em event, earning $434,789. He then won his second bracelet at the same WSOP in the $2,500 2-7 Triple Draw event, earning $151,896.
Still in 2008 That same year he finished 6th at the WPT $9,600 No-Limit Hold'em season 6 event at the Bay 101 Shooting Stars, earning $135,000. Later that same year Phan made another WPT final table finishing in 5th place at the Bellagio Cup IV, earning $193,915. Also in 2008, during the WPT 7th season, Phan won his first WPT title, winning over $1.1 million at the Legends of Poker.
Because of his 2 bracelets and 3 WPT final tables during 2008, he was Cardplayer Magazine 2008 Player of the Year and Bluff Magazine 2008 Player of the Year.
As of 2009, Phan has 2 WSOP bracelets, 16 WSOP cashes, 11 WPT cashes, 4 WPT final tables, and live tournament winnings exceeding $5,300,000.
